The early days on the table top that is now into year two!

This book matched walnut tabletop started as a split slab in a field. After hand planing the surface of one side, the quality quality of the grain led me to one conclusion...I would use it all: the crack, the sapwood and the twist. After agonizing weeks of work the one slab became two and the real challenge began.

Twelve floating tenons of different lengths were shaped and fitted into the tabletop. These white oak tenons were ebonized using vinegar and iron solution to a charcoal black.Together these tenons turned the two slab into a solid, strong and surprisingly delicate looking tabletop. Its around 100 pounds and has been finished with multiple coats of tung oil.
